Jo Kreyl is a New Zealand born artist based in Wellington. She graduated from the Wellington Polytechnic in 1991 after completing three years of visual communication & design. Since then Jo has worked in many aspects of illustration, design & fine art.
Jo is proficient in a wide variety of mediums, including acrylic, oil, watercolour, sculpture & resin.
In her paintings, Jo is drawn to find beauty in the ordinary or time worn. She is fascinated in the history of various objects & likes to think about the people that may have owned or used these. In choosing to paint such 'everyday items' such as old toys etc, she elevates them to objects of importance, freezing them in time, as if they were enclosed in a Victorial glass dome. This theme of making objects more beautiful than they are (kalopsia) runs throughout this artists work.
In 1991 Jo won the Visa Gold Art Award and has also illustrated five sets on NZ stamps for NZ Post.
Her most recent works are larger floral still lifes.
